Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have Question about a Septic System? Here is some helpful information about septic systems and information on how to maintain them.

  • What is a septic system and how does it work?

Diagram of how a septic system works

A septic system is your own private waste recycling plant that breaks down your wastewater and returns it to the ground in a safe manner.

It is made up of two main parts, a septic tank, and a drain field. The septic tank is a watertight container, usually made of concrete or polyethylene, that allows any solids to settle out. This is where anaerobic bacteria start the breakdown process. Effluent (the liquid) then passes through the filter and is discharged out in the drain field. This is where aerobic bacteria go to work on the wastewater and return it back to the earth.

  • Are there any maintenance requirements?

Systems installed from 2001 to the present should have a filter in the tank that requires maintenance. It is usually in the middle lid and needs to be pulled out, washed off and inserted back in firmly. Most filters have an indent that you can feel when it is fully inserted. Some filers require you to turn it a specific direction that would be marked on the top side. Not cleaning the filter increases the possibility of your septic system backing up into your house. This needs to be done a minimum of 2 times a year. Never leave the filter out. Leaving the filter out will end up plugging up your drain field.

  • How often should my septic tank be pumped?

Another maintenance item is having your septic tank pumped out. It is recommended that you have this done every 3 to 5 years. The tanks are designed to hold the solids if they do not break down. This adds up over time, so depending on the use it will vary how often you need to have it pumped out.

  • Can I use additives?

Additives can be harmful to your Septic System; some additives will kill the bacteria that is naturally breaking down your waste. If you are having a problem with your septic system, give us a call at 319-530-8340, we will evaluate the problem and make recommendations.

  • Can I use a garbage disposal if I have a septic system?

A garbage disposal is not recommended, the additional food and grease that is typically added to the septic system will not break down. This causes your filter to plug up frequently and your tank to fill up faster.

  • How long do septic systems last?

With proper maintenance and installation your system can last 50 years or longer.

  • Can my water softener flush into my septic system?

Water softener discharge is harmful to your concrete septic tank and tends to suspend solids. The life of your concrete tank may be shortened and may require more frequent maintenance. If your water softener is currently discharging into your septic system give us a call at 319-530-8340, we have alternative solutions for your water softener discharge.

  • Do any medical treatments affect my septic system?

Unfortunately, some harsh medications can have a drastic affect on your septic system.  Chemotherapy in particular is designed to kill cancer cells in your body, the waste from the cancer patient will also kill any bacteria in the septic system and the gasses produced can eat away at the concrete tank. As an example, one of our customers had a concrete tank that was only 4 years old, but due to waste from a chemotherapy patent, the tank had deteriorated to the condition of a 50 year old tank and in need of replacement. If you or a family member are taking any harsh medications give us a call at 319-530-8340 for a free evaluation of your septic system.
